Parque de Bombas, Ponce


Parque de Bombas was built in 1882 and by 1885 was know as Ponce's official fire station. A Spanish army soldier, Lt. Colonel Maximo de Meana y Guridi, was assigned to design and construct the building. It was originally built for the 1882 Exhibition Trade Fair. Its measuring at about 65'-8" in width, by 26'-3" in length. This station was Ponce's first ever fire station and it continued to serve the city of Ponce until 1990. Now, the building serves as a museum, honoring Ponce's firemen. 

San Juan National Historic Site

San Juan National Historic Site

       San Juan National Historic Site was built between the 16th and 19th centuries to protect the city and the Bay of San Juan. The ancient stone walls rise high above the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Tunnels and the staircases wind through the interior leading back to the time when the fort provided the keystone to protection of the of the Spanish Empire that spread across the Caribbean. It took a long time Spanish to build the castle fort and city walls that comprise the San Juan National Historic Site. The first tower as Castillo San Feiple de Morro and LA Fortaleza rose in 1539. As time flew El Morro grew to six levels.

Mayaguez Zoo 

  • It is the only zoo on the island 
  • It is named in honor of Juan A. Rivera 
  • The zoo was originally opened in 1954
  • It contains about 340 species 
  • The Mayaguez zoo is managed by the  compania of parques nacionales
